There is one famous example of a company allowing an employee to criticize their own company. Robert Scoble and Microsoft. However, in some ways Microsoft was a special case because of the history of the court case during the late 1990's. Microsoft's reputation had been damaged during the case, and many customers were neutral or negative towards the company.
